On an unusually sweltering morning in June, we found what we’d been looking for. “Him, him, that’s him,” cried one man. All the people stared curiously around us, hard to distinguish a native Pala’wan from the people they call mga Kristyano. So I couldn’t tell at whom the man was pointing. “Ask him,” he told us, “that man can write Arabic.” We hadn’t patience to correct him at that moment. It wasn’t the Arabic letters we were in search of (and it was not Arabic). It was the script of the Palawan Tribe-Which was on the verge of disappearing.
